This report begins with a statement of the concepts and a review of design practice. Discussion on previous laboratory and field work relevant to the design practice is also included. This is followed by a brief description of the extensive laboratory studies undertaken for the project.
The laboratory tests carried out in random waves give the volume of riprap eroded measured as a function of the number of incident waves of several significant heights and three mean wave periods for three sizes of riprap and four different slopes. A step by step best practice design procedure based on both existing design practice and experimental results obtained is given with design examples.
