Design of the built environment for the ageing population

Document type: Recorded lecture | Last updated: 8 JULY 2011

ICE/EPSRC Seminar 2009

By 2050, one third of Europe's population will be over 60 and the number of people over 80 is expected to have doubled.  Both private and public sectors will be forced to take into account the needs of an ageing population.  In the construction sector, this will include house builders, road builders, transport providers and urban planners.

This seminar examines the changing needs and what the engineer and associated professions can do to ensure that these needs will be met within the built environment.  It includes:

changing demographics in the UK
understanding the need for research into engineering solutions
the importance of designing caring environments
the impact of the built environment on quality of life
the impact of an accessible infrastructure
the experience of the pedestrian
inclusive environments: audio-visual environments

Speakers include:
David Sinclair, Help the Aged
Professor Peter Lansley, University of Reading
Julienne Hanson, University College London
Professor Elizabeth Burton, Oxford Brookes University
Professor Marcus Ormerod, University of Salford
Professor Nick Tyler, University College London
Geoff Cook, University of Reading
