Disproportionate Collapse of Class 3 Structures

Document type: | Last updated: 17 FEBRUARY 2012

Approved Document A and the Eurocodes introduce the concept of formal risk assessment into the structural assessment of Class 3 structures (although the principles apply to all structures). Hitherto there has been a dearth of advice and guidance as to how this should be implemented in a value adding manner.

This meeting presented three project examples of how this was achieved in practice with a following debate on the issues involved: what is disproportionate?; what form should a ‘risk assessment’ take?, what issues should be covered? ; need methods distinguish between materials? ; how should this be presented to Building  Control?

This subject will be of interest to all designers but specifically to those who design Class 3 structures. It will also be of value to the material sectors, Building Control and academics.
