Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) technology is well established in Europe for domestic use and for commercial buildings.  It has been little used in the UK but there is now increasing interest in the technology as it uses renewable heat resource and because it will become increasingly more economic as gas prices rise.

Civil engineers have a key role to play in the development of this technology for use in large buildings.  Karl Drage and Tony Amis look at the key technical and commercial issues in GSHP systems and the installation of energy piles in commercial and industrial buildings.
