Energy status report - Biomass

pdf 67 kB Document type: .pdf | Last updated: 8 MARCH 2010

Topics:

Biomass energy draws from either stored solar energy during photosynthetic growth of plants, or energy derived from animal waste, for the generation of electricity and/or heat. This ICE summary sheet (2009) provides an introduction to biomass and considers the biomass resources of energy crops and organic residues.  It highlights modern process technologies for efficient conversion into energy, including anaerobic digestion and incineration.  It examines newer technologies involving gasification and pyrolsis equipment, and combined heat and power (CHP).  The report also looks at how the UK compares on a global scale and summaries the key issues to be considered.
