Will Day, Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission
ICE/Halcrow Sustainability Lecture 2010
There is a growing awareness of the tension between the current global economic growth model, based on an unsustainable level of consumption, and the unmet aspirations of billions of people around the world.
Is the engineering profession part of the solution, or part of the problem? As the world responds to explosive growth in its cities and towns, are we designing and building precisely the same things that we are busy pulling down in more developed economies?
In this stimulating lecture, Will Day sets out the challenges of establishing a sustainable economy. He questions whether we have a long term model of human wellbeing and environmental health and the role engineers have in reaching a sustainable solution.
Will Day also refers to the 2009 ICE/Halcrow Sustainability Lecture in which Amory Lovins (Rock Mountain Institute) looks at advanced design integration for radical energy efficiency.
