Expansion of Electrified Rail Network

Document type: | Last updated: 14 JULY 2011

Topics:

In 2009 Network Rail published the Route Utilisation Strategy for Electrification, identifying preferred routes for electric traction infrastructure. The UK Government has now given support to expansion of the 25kV electrified rail network, specifically on the Great Western Mainline and Liverpool-Manchester area, both requiring major adjustment to historically significant infrastructure. The projects are a progression of the technical expertise gained in rebuilding the West Coast Mainline and the more recent Aidrie-Bathgate scheme.

This half day seminar on 11 July 2011 examined the planning and provision of this new rail infrastructure. The panel of expert speakers provided an update on the following themes (use the scroll bar to start at the beginning of each presentation as indicated by the timeline in brackets) :

■ Strategy and Funding (2.3mins) Mark Gaynor, Technical Manager, Rail Systems, Department for Transport

■ Planning and Procurement (43mins) David Golding, Network Rail

■ Design (1hr 27mins) Richard Lindop, Head of Engineering Assurance, Jacobs

■ Implementation (2hr 1min) Keith Warburton, Head of Electrified Design, Balfour Beatty Rail
