Professor David Bayliss
ICE/TRF Prestige Lecture 2008
Fifty years have passed since Britain's first stretch of motorway was opened - the M6 Preston By-pass. Since that time much has changed. This lecture outlines the development of the main road system in Britain from the first appearance of motor vehicles, through the pre-motorway era, to the current day. Professor David Bayliss compares Britain's current motorway network to that of other European countries and spells out the challenges of providing a fit-for-purpose national road network. He also argues that a combination of more efficient road user pricing, along with a programme of new and expanded motorways and trunk roads, should be a vital and central component of national transport policy.
