ICE & Costain Prestige Health and Safety Lecture

Document type: | Last updated: 20 DECEMBER 2011

Following last year’s excellent discussion of ‘behavioural safety’, we tackle another current hot topic, with speakers drawn from three perspectives: Government, Regulator and Employer.

The speakers focus on whether investment in Occupational Health brings win-win all round – for the individual, business, and the taxpayer.

Areas covered include:

■ Does occupational health make sites safer, reducing the propensity for accidents?
■ Does it improve performance?
■ Does it enhance general wellbeing?
■ Should business be involved in an individual’s health, and invade the GP’s historic territory – or is this ‘personal space’?
■ Is it just philanthropy, or is there a business case for further investment?

Speakers:

Dame Carol Black is the first National Director for Health and Work, and is Professor of rheumatology at UCL. Her DWP review working for a healthier tomorrow found that ill health amongst the working population costs the UK £100bn annually

Philip White has been the HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction since 2008, prior to which he worked for the DWP, advising Ministers on health and safety policy

Lawrence Waterman is Head of Health & Safety at the Olympic Delivery Authority, prior to which he was Occupational Health Advisor to Heathrow Terminal 5, and was a founder-member of Sypol
