ICE Thames Hub Airport Debate

Document type: | Last updated: 4 MAY 2012

The Greater South East’s international connectivity is constrained by the limited runway capacity at its busiest airports, which causes delays and restricts growth of direct links to emerging economies. In late 2011 the Government announced that it would seriously consider “all options for maintaining the UK’s aviation hub status except a third runway at Heathrow” and develop a long term aviation strategy to address the UK’s airport capacity challenges, while ensuring aviation plays its part in delivering environmental goals and protecting the quality of life of local communities. A number of recent proposals in support of a Thames Estuary Hub Airport, with integrated infrastructure development, have emerged, sparking a public debate about the best way to tackle the UK’s aviation capacity challenge.
