Professor Iain Mowatt, University of Newcastle
ICE Smeaton Lecture 2010
John Bateman (ICE President 1877-1879) was responsible for the construction of a greater number of dams than any other of his era. Most notable amongst his major projects were the Loch Katrine scheme to supply Glasgow, and the Longdendale reservoirs serving Manchester.
Professor Iain Moffatt outlines the career of this important 19th century engineer and examines the scale and boldness of those two projects which, he argues, must assure Bateman a place high in the pantheon of great Victorian civil engineers.
