Learning from bridge failure

ICE Seminar and Panel Discussion 2008

Over the last few years there have been a number of notable bridge failures.  There has been concern about lack of information following failures.  Communication problems seem to be behind some recent events.  The difficulty has often been in accessing and interpreting the information which often remains locked away for years by the legal position.  The information needs to be widely shared for the benefit of the industry and society.

This seminar covers:

■ responding to international failures
■ the significance of thorough investigation
■ the importance of strong communication to prevent failures
■ press and profession: working together rather than against
■ looking to the future: ensuring lessons are learnt

Speakers include:
Amrit Ghose, Regional Director Faber Maunsell and Chair, ICE Structures Panel
John Carpenter, Standing Committee on Structural Safety
Richard Fish, Director, UK Bridges Board
Jolyon Gill, Director, Jolyon Gill Consultancy Ltd
Neil Loudon, Network Services, Highways Agency
Dave Parker, Journalist and former Technical Editor, New Civil Engineer
Barry Mawson, Editor, Bridge Engineering Journal
