Raising Abberton Reservoir

Document type: | Last updated: 10 OCTOBER 2012

Essex is the driest area of the country and the reservoir raising will soon provide an additional 15 Mm3 of storage for Essex and Greater London. The project is the largest reservoir scheme currently under construction in the UK and will be the first of a new-generation of schemes that address water-resource shortages in the south east of England.

The original dam failed during construction in 1938 and the planning, engineering and construction of the raised reservoir has been a lengthy process. Many other factors have also contributed to the complexity of the scheme, including the reservoir's importance for migatory birds and the need to maintain full operation of the reservoir throughout the process.

The presentation describes the technical challenges of constructing the raised dam and appurtenant works and how best use was made of the existing assets by retaining and modifying the original structures. Construction work is approaching substantial completion and the presentation illustrates this with recent photographs of the construction. Over 60 people joined the event live online and contributed at the Q&A. Some of their comments: " Please convey congratulations to the speakers particularly on the excellent slides"  and "Great Presentation".
