Refurbishment of the Forth Bridge

Document type: | Last updated: 7 FEBRUARY 2013

The repair and painting of the Forth Bridge has finally been completed and the structure is now scaffold-free for the first time in a decade. It will not now need another paint job for at least 25 years. New techniques and products are behind the success of the project which took 10 years and cost £130M. The completion of this refurbishment will safeguard the future of one of the country's most famous landmarks.

Duncan Sooman is a Fellow of the Institution and Head of Engineering, Infrastructure Projects, Scotland and North East for Network Rail, and has been involved with the refurbishment of the bridge from the creation of Railtrack to the completion.
