Safety first as second nature: a question of priorities

Document type: Recorded lecture | Last updated: 11 JULY 2011

Gordon Masterton, Vice President, Jacobs Engineering
ICE/IStructE Prestige Lecture 2007

The constraints imposed on civil and structural engineers in modern business are complex and demanding: schedules, costs, sustainability, buildability, aesthetics, responsibility interfaces, client demands, economy, whole-life cost, environmental impact, carbon footprint - and safety

Gordon Masterton asks whether we're doing enough to ensure that safety isn't last in our priorities.  Recent high-profile collapses in Europe and the UK would suggest we're not doing enough.  For all we have achieved in civil and structural engineering we cannot yet be satisfied with our safety record

This lecture draws on personal, corporate and published experience of analysing failures and successes and sets out some challenging ideas for change in the field of safety.
