Surface and Sub-Surface Settlements due to Tunnelling. As the underground space in our urban centres becomes increasingly congested, linear tunnels are being constructed ever deeper to avoid existing underground infrastructure. Although deeper tunnels generally present less risk of excessive settlement at the surface, it is still necessary to attempt to predict those settlements, and to predict the larger settlements that may be experienced by underground structures much closer to the tunnel horizon.
