This 2002 position statement discusses the potential options for handling an anticipated increased volume of sludge, and makes recommendations on a preferred strategy. The paper looks at methods available for the recycling or disposal of sludge, including agriculture, incineration, energy recovery, landfill, gasification and alternative technologies. It also highlights the key criteria for selection of a re-use route.
