ICE James Forrest Lecture 2009

The development of wave power has mainly taken place since the mid-1970s, with a significant increase in activity over the past decade.  However there have only been a handful of successful demonstration projects at the several hundred kilowatt scale.  There are a number of technological and economic challenges which are being addressed by wave power developers and the next few years should see the emergence of multi megawatt wave farms.

This lecture presents the design options available to the wave power developer and is illustrated by historic, current and potential future examples such as the Oyster.  Trevor Whittaker sets wave power in context relative to other marine renewable and presents its future prospects.  He also shows the research role universities have had in the development of this industry.
