Microtunnelling is defined as pipe jacking employing a remote-controlled tunnelling machine. This briefing sheet provides an overview to microtunnelling. It looks back at the history of pipe jacking, and summarises the two broad techniques: Auger based systems and slurry systems. The paper also outlines the common applications of microtunnelling and considers the cost issues. A source of further information is also included. Published December 2006.
