This report examines the feasibility of a high-speed north-south railway system from a technical standpoint. It looks at which transport technology is most appropriate to the UK's needs - steel wheel/steel rail or magnetic levitation? And it examines whether a very high-speed system should link city centres or out-of-town transport 'parkways'. The report also maps potential barriers to implementing a high-speed railway, including physical, demographic and socio-economic issues.
