Visiting the Library

Located on the first floor of the ICE headquarters at One Great George Street, the ICE Library is open to members and other visitors who wish to use the facilities.

Who can use the Library?

  • Members of the ICE, the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) may use the Library's full services, including loans.
  • Members of other engineering institutions and of the ICE's Associated Societies (such as the BGA or BTS) may use the Library's reference facilities, as may members of overseas engineering societies.
  • Members of the public can access the historical collections and the archives by appointment with the Archivist.
  • In all other cases, a day charge will be made for the use of the Library's reference services, unless the visitor has a letter of introduction from, or is accompanying, a member of the ICE. This charge is £10.00 or £5.00 for students and the unemployed.

Finding your way around the Library

Computers are provided at the west end of the Library with access to the Library catalogue and to a number of online resources. Current issues of journals can be found at the east end, next to the fireplace.

The locations of items are shown in the catalogue by a number and letter code (e.g. 624.012 ML). Items ending ML (Main Library) or PRESS 68 (ICE publications) can be found under the given shelf mark; these are, with a couple of exceptions, arranged in numerical order around the walls of the Main Library (see the plan below). For any other items (e.g.: TFV, ULG, B, M) please note location and title and request them from the Library reception desk.
