Associated societies

Membership of the Associated Societies is open to anyone wanting to share experience or knowledge on all aspects of engineering.

Through their members, the Associated Societies accomplish their goals by a wide variety of activities.

These activities include:

There are 13 Associated Societies administered by the Institution. 

The Societies are:


British Dam Society (BDS)
Open to anyone wanting to share experience or knowledge of all aspects of dams and reservoirs.

British Geotechnical Association (BGA)
Principal association for geotechnical engineers in the United Kingdom. It performs the role of the ICE Ground Board, as well as being the UK member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM).

British Hydrological Society (BHS)
Broadly based national society 'to promote interest and scholarship in both the scientific and applied aspects of hydrology and to foster involvement of its members in international activities'.

British Tunnelling Society (BTS)
Formed in 1971 to provide a forum for meetings and discussion on tunnel related matters, the Society also publishes industry guidelines and codes of practice, conducts design and construction training courses, acknowledges excellence in tunnelling and supports scholarship and disseminates information via its monthly meetings.

Central Dredging Association (CEDA)
Provides a forum for the exchange of information on developments in dredging techniques and technology. The General Secretariat is based in Delft and the British Section is located at the ICE.

Hazards Forum (HF)
The Hazards Forum is an interdisciplinary community of organisations and individuals interested in the assessment and management of risk that provides a high level forum for reasoned debate through discussion, such as at regular events.

International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID)
The Society welcomes members from all backgrounds who have an interest in irrigation, drainage, agriculture, flood control, or in any related activity.

Offshore Engineering Society (OES)
Promotes interest and scholarship in both scientific and applied aspects of offshore engineering and it’s management for oil and gas exploitation of marine renewable energy generation. It provides a forum for the exchange of information and views.

PIANC (International Navigation Association)
Forum where professionals around the world join forces to provide expert advice on cost-effective, reliable and sustainable infrastructures to facilitate the growth of waterborne transport.

Railway Civil Engineers’ Association (RCEA)
The Association exists to foster continuing professional development and the exchange of knowledge and experience between railway engineers by way of meetings, technical papers, site visits to engineering works and discussions about railway engineering. Areas of interest not only include main line, but also Metros, London Underground and light rail. Members are from the whole of the railway industry, both heavy and light rail, from client organizations, consultants, contractors and suppliers.

Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED)
Founded in 1969 to promote the study and practice of earthquake engineering and civil engineering dynamics, the society acts as a forum for professionals who need to keep abreast of the rapid developments in the field. SECED is the British branch of both the International Association and the European Association of Earthquake Engineering.

Transport Planning Society (TPS)
Its vision is to provide professional development and a meeting place for all those working in the transport sector and leading the response to emerging policy challenges.
Its mission is to develop our members, the transport planning profession, leadership on local, regional, national and global transport challenges.          

Wind Engineering Society (WES)
Promotes co-operation in the advancement of knowledge and the beneficial application of that knowledge in all aspects of wind engineering.
