The Institution of Civil Engineers administers 15 ‘Expert Panels’ - sector specific committees which devise, implement and drive projects that promote civil engineering as an industry at the heart of society. These 15 panels are intended to cover the breadth of the profession.
The technical knowledge of ICE's Expert Panels forms the backbone of the Institution’s status as a learned society. The Panels act as a focus for the various areas of civil engineering, enabling ICE to respond to consultations and bills, produce papers and guidance on best practice, influence government policy and hold conferences and debates.
The purpose of the Expert Panels is to create knowledge delivery activities by:
- Identifying the national and global challenges civil engineers will have to address
- Identifying the knowledge that civil engineers need to develop to deal with these challenges
- Proposing learned society activities such as events, conferences, lectures, research, policy and consultation activity
- Recommending the creation of ‘lifed’ panels as appropriate. [‘Lifed’ panels are set up to address specific multidisciplinary problems. These panels are of limited duration and they disband once they’ve achieved what they were set up to do]
- Maintaining active communities delivering learned society activity in conjunction with ICE staff
- Stimulating beneficial changes in their branch of the profession
- Ensuring that their branch of the profession remains visible and attractive to new recruits
The Expert Panels help the Institution in enhancing its position as the leading source of expert civil engineering knowledge. The work the Panels produce is available to ICE members, practitioners, industry and society.
