What is a Reviewer?
A Reviewer is an experienced, professionally qualified Member of the ICE with good interviewing and assessment skills, who acting on behalf of the ICE, assesses the suitability of candidates for membership at any of the grades available.
Becoming an ICE Reviewer
Experienced Members of the Institution may be invited to apply to become a Reviewer on the recommendation of other Reviewers, ICE Committee or Panel members, or officers of the Institution.
Requirements of a Reviewer
Reviewers must have appropriate attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and currency of background knowledge to ask fair yet robust questions and set an environment for the candidate’s best interview performance. They are required to judge against set criteria and not their own. They need the ability to keep an open mind throughout the process and not be influenced by factors outside the assessment criteria and review protocols. They must be reasonably strong minded and able to make balanced decisions.
What are the commitments?
The commitment of a new Reviewer:
- Compulsory attendance at New Reviewer Training day
- Observe a live review (as part of training day)
- Undertake at least six reviews over two sessions in the first year (paired with experienced Reviewers)
The commitment of an existing Reviewer:
- No fixed commitment each year (however, one review day minimum per year is strongly recommended)
- Any Reviewer who has not attended a review day for four consecutive sessions (over the period of two years) will be expected to attend a refresher course before continuing as a Reviewer
Reviewer Training
The training program for new Reviewers consists of three stages.
- Stage 1 applicants will be invited to attend a New Reviewers’ Training seminar. The seminars are normally held twice a year at One Great George Street coinciding with a Review session and lasts for one day; applicants will be required to sit-in as observers on a live review as part of the training session.
- Stage 2 applicants will then be invited to offer themselves as Reviewers for future sessions. Subject to the normal matching process (section 2.2), they will be paired with experienced Lead Reviewers for two sessions to undertake at least six interviews.
- Stage 3 - Subject to favourable reports by the Lead Reviewers, the ICE’s Professional Reviews Panel (PRP) will be asked to confirm the acceptance of the applicant on to the Register of Reviewers.
All Reviewers on the Register, who review regularly, will be expected to attend refresher training courses every three years. These are normally held during the review sessions. If Reviewers have not reviewed for four consecutive sessions (two years), they will be required to attend a refresher course before continuing as Reviewers.
The appointment, training and conduct of Reviewers is the responsibility of the Institution’s Professional Review Panel (PRP). Reviewers receive out-of pocket expenses only.
