Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE)

Supervising Civil Engineers play an important role in the efficient running of ICE approved training schemes. The SCE is responsible for the overall control of the training scheme and will play a significant part in the running of an effective scheme.

Role of the SCE

The SCE should be the first point of contact in relation to any questions that a trainee may have in relation to the training scheme and will be instrumental in the development of the training scheme, thereby releasing the full potential of the trainees during their Initial Professional Development.

The SCE should take responsibility for meeting new trainees before they join an approved training scheme and take responsibility for ensuring that a trainee has the necessary academic qualification(s) for the relevant grade of membership being sought.

How to register as an SCE

The SCE role is an important one for the company, ICE and the individual. Consequently it is essential that the SCE is registered with ICE. An SCE’s registration is only applicable with the company where they are registered. Should an SCE move companies it will be necessary to re-register.

It is also important that the SCE maintains currency in the training role. Consequently there is a need to retrain and reregister if the SCE has been inactive for two years.

The SCE should seek registration with their local Regional Membership Development Officer if based in the UK, or with Mike Rogers, Membership Development Manager if based overseas.

Details of the requirements for the SCE role and the activities that should be undertaken are provided in MGN 12 (UK) and MGN 12a (non UK).
