Society of the Environment (SocEnv)

Registration as a Chartered Environmentalist is with the Society of the Environment. The Society aspires to be the leading and co-ordinating professional body in environmental matters and a pre-eminent champion of a sustainable environment.

ICE is licensed to award qualification as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).

Routes to Chartered Environmentalist

There are two main routes to becoming a Chartered Environmentalist: 

1. Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)

This route is open to those who are already professionally qualified at Associate Member (AMICE)Member (MICE) or Fellow (FICE) of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

To obtain CEnv you must be successful at the Chartered Environmentalist Professional Review. You must demonstrate knowledge of, competence in and engagement with, sustainable management of the environment. Read ICE3008A for more information on this route.

2. Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (AMICE)

This is a combined review for those who wish to obtain professionally qualified status of ICE together with registration as a Chartered Environmentalist.

To obtain CEnv AMICE you must be successful at the joint CEnv/AMICE Professional Review at which you must demonstrate knowledge of, competence in and engagement with; sustainable management of the environment together with demonstrating an understanding of technical or scientific rather than engineering principles. 

It is possible to sit these two reviews separately, obtaining AMICE initially followed by CEnv upon adequate completion of the Environmentalist Objectives and subsequent review.

Making an application

How to apply for Chartered Environmentalist Professional Review (CEPR)

Candidates are required to submit specific documents and supporting information in accordance with the application procedures stated in Appendix D of ICE 3008A.

CEPR - making an application

The following information must be submitted:

  • Complete the CEnv Professional Review Application Form - ICE 3108
  • Obtain the support of 3 sponsors (joint review only), each sponsor must complete ICE 3123 Sponsor questionnaire
  • Provide evidence of the appropriate educational base (joint review only)
  • Provide evidence of completion of Initial Professional Development /Environmentalist Professional Development

It is important that you allow sufficient time to plan and prepare for your Professional Review. You should regularly check the key dates section of the website for any changes that may affect your preparation time.

Fees

  • A non-refundable application fee must be submitted with your application
  • On admission as an Associate Member (AMICE), you must pay the ICE entrance fee (unless you are an ICE Graduate member of at least 2 year’s standing), then an annual subscription fee to maintain your membership
  • For registration with the Society of the Environment (SocEnv), you will be required to pay the relevant entrance fee and an annual subscription fee to maintain your registration
