Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) can be awarded to a wide range of engineers practising in the broad area of civil engineering. Professionally qualified members of ICE are internationally recognised for their level of competence.
Membership MICE can be awarded at two levels:
1. Member Professional Review (MPR)
The first level is for those who have satisfied all the requirements of the Member Professional Review (MPR). Their educational base and subsequent development enable them to act as exponents of today's technology, and apply and manage its application within the broad field of civil engineering. As a member, they are entitled to use the post-nominal letters MICE to their name.
Provided the educational base meets the Engineering Council standard, they will also qualify for registration with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). This is subject to the Professional Review interview being conducted in English, subject only to the provisions of the Welsh Language Act 1993.
2. Chartered Professional Review (CPR)
The second level is for those who have satisfied the requirements of the Chartered Professional Review (CPR). Their educational base and subsequent development have provided them with the ability to lead teams in developing holistic solutions to engineering problems. As a member, they are entitled to add the letters MICE to their name and use the ICE’s protected title of Chartered Civil Engineer.
These members also qualify for registration with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This is subject to the Professional Review interview being conducted in English, subject only to the provisions of the Welsh Language Act 1993.
Non standard routes to MICE
If an individuals academic qualifications do not meet the ICE requirements for Membership (MICE) or the Engineering Council's educational base for registration to become IEng or CEng, they may still be able to demonstrate that they have acquired this in a number of other ways.
Find out more about the ICE non standard routes or see ICE 3004A for details.
Standard route to MICE
There are three stages in qualifying as a Member (MICE) via the standard route:
1. Educational Base
The starting point for any aspiring member is their educational achievement. This can be satisfied by one, or a combination of the following ways:
• UK accredited course
• International accredited course
• Academic assessment of non-accredited course
• Further learning
If your academic qualification does not meet the Engineering Council benchmark, you may demonstrate that you have compensated for the shortfall in a number of other ways. See ICE 3004A for details of how you can do this using ICE’s non standard routes.
2. Initial Professional Development
Initial Professional Development (IPD) is where you develop the special skills and competence as a practising civil engineer. IPD can be satisfied by completion of one of the following:
• ICE approved training schemes
• Self managed training & experience (career appraisal)
For information of Initial Professional Development, Continuing Professional Development and Development Objectives please read ICE 3005A and ICE 3006A.
For full detail of the attributes which must be demonstrated at the Professional Review, please see Appendix A of ICE 3001A – Route to Membership.
