European Directive Route

European Directive 2005/36/EC concerns the recognition of professional qualifications across the European Union (EU). ICE is the UK competent authority for the implementation of this Directive for the profession of civil engineering.
 
EU nationals who are legally established (within the terms of the Directive) to practise the profession of civil engineering in another EU Member State may apply for ICE membership in the UK via this Route.

Benefits

  • If you are already legally established as a professionally qualified civil engineer, civil engineering technologist, or civil engineering technician, within the EU and the terms of the Directive, you will be exempt from following ICE’s standard route to Membership (MICE) and Engineering Council registration.
  • Becoming a member entitles you to a wide range of benefits to support you in your civil engineering career.

Am I eligible?

  • Eligibility for this route is based on meeting specific criteria for legal establishment as defined in the Directive.
  • The criteria you must meet depends on whether civil engineering is a regulated or unregulated profession in your home Member State. Please consult MGN 28 to check your eligibility.

How to make an application

  • Complete the European Directive Application Form ICE 3136 for CEng MICE or IEng MICE, or European Directive Application Form ICE 3136a for EngTech TMICE.
  • Consult MGN 28 for a step by step guide to making your application.
  • Guidance on how to demonstrate ICE’s Member attributes in your application is available from ICE Regional Support Teams (RST’s) in the UK. If you are applying from outside the UK, please contact erp@ice.org.uk for guidance. 

Key dates

  • You can submit an application via this route at any time.
  • You will receive either confirmation that your application is complete or a request for further information within one month of receipt of your application.
  • You will receive a decision on your application within four months of the one month confirmation.

Fees

  • A non-refundable European Directive application fee must be submitted with your application. Refer to MGN 28 for further details.
  • If you are required to complete a compensation measure, a further fee will be required.
  • On admission as a Member, you must pay the ICE entrance fee (unless you are an ICE Graduate member of at least 2 years standing), and an annual subscription fee to maintain your membership.
  • If you also wish to register with Engineering Council as CEng, IEng or EngTech, you will be required to pay the relevant entrance fee, then an annual subscription fee to maintain your registration.
