Technical Report Route (TRR)

Gaining membership via theTechnical Report Route (TRR) will depend on your experience and competence as well as on your understanding of engineering principles.

If you do not hold academic qualifications that satisfy our educational base requirement for a particular grade of membership, the TRR may allow you to use your work experience to compensate for this shortfall.

Benefits

  • You can use your work experience to demonstrate academic equivalence and understanding of Engineering Principles.
  • You can still gain a professional qualification even if you do not have the opportunity to continue with your academic studies.
  • Becoming a Member (MICE) entitles you to a wide range of benefits to support you in your civil engineering career.

Am I eligible?

  • If you do not satisfy the educational base for admission as a Member and registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and you have the appropriate practical experience then you may be eligible to make a formal application via the Technical Report Route.
  • If you meet the educational base appropriate for your desired level of registration, you follow the standard route described in ICE 3001A.

Full details of the attributes for MICE can be found in ICE 3001A.

  • Please note if you are looking to become a Technician Member of ICE (TMICE) and registered with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) via the Technical Report Route (TRR), please see our TRR TMICE section.

TRR Interview

The Interview process consists of two parts on the same day.

  • An Academic Review to ascertain how your experience has compensated for the shortfall in your educational base compared with someone of similar experience who does have the required educational base.
  • A Professional Review to determine whether you possess the required professional attributes.

The Academic Review is based on your Technical Report and the Professional Review on your Experience Report. You will need to satisfy the Academic Review before proceeding to the Professional Review.

For further guidance on the Technical Report Route, see MGN 35.
Registration with the Engineering Council is subject to candidates holding the appropriate academic base and the interview being conducted in English subject only to the provisions of the Welsh Language Act 1993.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. If my initial stage application is not approved, do I have to pay the initial application fee again when I resubmit my revised application?

You will not need to pay the fee again, providing that you submit your revised submission within one year after you receive your result letter.

2. How long does the whole process take?

The initial stage takes about four to six weeks. If the Technical Routes Panel approves your synopsis, then the time taken to make an application for stage two really depends on you but must be within a year after you receive your approval letter.
