Technical Report Route - TMICE

The Technical Report Route (TRR) may allow you to use the academic knowledge gained by other means, including your work experience, to compensate for the lack of the required educational base without completing a period of formal study.

Benefits

  • You can use your work experience to demonstrate academic equivalence and understanding of Engineering Principles.
  • You can still gain a professional qualification even if you do not have the opportunity to continue with your academic studies.
  • Becoming a Technician Member (TMICE) entitles you to a wide range of benefits to support you in your civil engineering career.

Am I eligible?

  • If you do not satisfy the educational base for admission as a Technician Member and registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) and you have the appropriate practical experience, then you may be eligible to make a formal application for the Technical Report Route.
  • If you meet the educational base appropriate for your desired level of registration, you must follow the standard route described in ICE 3002A.

Full details of the attributes for TMICE can be found in ICE 3002A for those wishing to become a Technician Member and gain registration with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

How to make an application

The Technical Report Route involves two stages:

1. Application (stage 1)

When making a TMICE TRR Application, you must submit the following:

  • Application Form ICE 3107a
  • Detailed CV
  • Technical Report showing how you demonstrate your competence endorsed by your Mentor
  • Letter or email of support from Mentor
  • Copy of your Professional Development Record and Development Action Plan (see ICE 3006A and ICE 3190)
  • Certified copies of any academic qualification held
  • 2 Sponsor Questionnaire Forms - ICE 3123
  • Application fee

MGN 36 for Technician (TMICE) provides further information.

Process of assessment

ICE assessors will carry out a desk study of your submitted documents. They might contact you or your Mentor to suggest amendments/different approaches in which case you will be invited to re-submit your application (without additional fees). When your submission has been approved, you will be invited to attend the TRR Professional Review.

2. The Professional Interview (stage 2)

Your documents will set the agenda for the interview, which will be carried out by two members of ICE who will act as your Reviewers. The interview will take the form of an informal discussion during which your Reviewers will engage you in discussion on issues highlighted in your CV and your Technical Report.

MGN 36 provides more information on the Professional Interview

Registration with the Engineering Council is subject to candidates holding the appropriate academic base and the interview being conducted in English subject only to the provisions of the Welsh Language Act 1993.

Fees

  • A non-refundable TRR TMICE application fee must be submitted with your initial application.
  • On admission as Technician Member (TMICE), you must pay the ICE entrance fee and then an annual subscription fee to maintain your membership.
