Chris Thornton works for Hydrotec Consultants and is currently studying Civil Engineering at Leeds College of Building for which he was awarded a QUEST Technician Scholarship
What were you hoping to achieve with your course?
By completing the course, I hope to achieve a recognised qualification within the industry which would assist my professional development within ICE. In addition, by doing this HND course I hope to achieve a detailed understanding of the major aspects of the civil engineering profession.
Tell us a bit about where you are working and what you are doing.
Throughout my studies I have worked at a consultancy called Hydrotec Consults ltd based in Leeds, who specialise in hydraulic design, modelling and CFD. Within the company I independently run numerous schemes ranging from major inlet works for British water utilities, to desalination pumping stations based in Australia and the Middle East. I am involved in all aspects of testing and design of the physical models, writing technical reports outlining all results and recommended modifications throughout the project. Each project requires detailed client liaisons and presentation of results at meetings.
Why did you apply for the QUEST Technician Scholarship?
The QUEST Technician Scholarship was an opportunity not to be missed! ICE is a major professional body within the profession. Acknowledgment of my abilities and commitment to the industry by getting the award was a massive plus for my CV and the company I work for.
How do you think getting this scholarship will/has helped or changed you?
Gaining the award has most definitely helped me in my career. It has given me the confidence to run my own schemes and interact with senior engineers. With a recognised award and achievement to my name I feel I can express my ideas with authority and purpose. The award has enabled me to have a greater standing within my company as no one else has had the award before.
Do you think that your scholarship will help you in your civil engineering career?
Gaining the award has opened doors and opportunities at work. The award has given me the confidence to go further and now I am currently putting together my portfolio for my Professional Review. This will definitely enhance my profile within the industry and for Hydrotec. Since getting the award, I’ve been invited to present a paper at a CIWEM meeting, allowing me to mix with other engineers with similar interests.
What advice would you give to someone else who is thinking about applying for the Technician Scholarship?
Do it!! It is an opportunity not to be missed. To have a recognised award from a professional body such as ICE during your studies is a huge advantage – especially in gaining employment when the current climate is so competitive.
