ICE Reviewer

Experienced Members of the Institution may be invited to apply to become Reviewer on the recommendation of other Reviewers, ICE Committee or Panel members, or officers of the Institution.

What is a Reviewer?

A Reviewer is an experienced, professionally qualified Member of the Institution with good interviewing skills, who assesses the suitability of candidates for Membership.

The appointment, training and conduct of Reviewers is the responsibility of the Institution’s Professional Review Panel (PRP). Reviewers receive out-of pocket expenses only.

Whilst they may have a particular knowledge of one branch of civil engineering or associated professions, it is expected that Reviewers will maintain a wide and current awareness of the civil engineering industry as a whole, particularly Health, Safety and Welfare. They should be conversant with the environment in which candidates work and have awareness of the systems and procedures currently in use.

Reviewers will be able to seek discourse from candidates rather than necessarily posing specific questions requiring factual answers. They will be able to make and justify an assessment without necessarily seeking to substantiate detailed facts, thus assessing the candidates in a holistic manner.

Reviewer Training

The training program for New Reviewers consists of three stages.

  • Stage 1 applicants will be invited to attend a New Reviewers’ Training seminar. The seminars are normally held twice a year at One Great George Street coinciding with a Review session and lasts for one day; applicants will be required to sit-in as observers on a live Review as part of the training session.

  • Stage 2 applicants will then be invited to offer themselves as Reviewers for future sessions. Subject to the normal matching process (section 2.2), they will be paired with experienced Lead Reviewers for two sessions to undertake at least six interviews.

  • Stage 3 - Subject to favourable reports by the Lead Reviewers, the ICE’s Professional Reviews Panel (PRP) will be asked  to confirm the acceptance of the applicant on to the Register of Reviewers.

All Reviewers on the Register, who review regularly, will be expected to attend refresher training courses every three years. These are normally held during the Review sessions. If Reviewers have not reviewed for four consecutive sessions (two years), they will be required to attend a refresher course before continuing as Reviewers.
