The awards, held by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), recognise the region’s top civil engineering projects.
Work carried out on the A46 Newark-Widmerpool improvement scheme was named the merit award winner in the large project category (civil engineering projects in the region costing more than £750,000). The project was designed by URS with Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering as the principal contractor and saw work on dualling the 28km stretch of road between Newark and Widmerpool and is the largest current engineering project in the East Midlands.
The project team’s vision was to create “Britain’s best built road” by embracing, delivering and sharing the best civil engineering practices in the industry.
The awards were judged by an eminent panel of senior civil engineers. The judges were particularly impressed with the innovative design and delivery of the project and the positive image of the construction industry in the East Midlands.
A46 Project Director Aidan Brannan commented: “The team is delighted to have been presented with this award. From a standing start in 2009 we had to very quickly collate a team to deliver this long awaited regional improvement scheme.
“To have independent verification that our best practice, innovative, collaborative and considerate approach is a winning formula is something we can all be very proud of.”
Derbyshire County Council was successful in the small project category, winning the merit award for the Chesterfield Canal Staveley Town Basin land reclamation scheme.
The small project category is open to projects in the East Midlands which cost less than £750,000.
The project, designed by Derbyshire County Council and carried out by principal contractor, N T Killingley Ltd, saw the construction of a new canal basin on the Chesterfield Canal at Staveley carried out in partnership with the Chesterfield Canal Trust Ltd and the Chesterfield Canal Partnership. Funding for the scheme was provided by the East Midlands Development Agency.
Costing £600,000, this provided a much needed mooring facility and the restoration of a 400 metre stretch of the canal with a new road entrance from Eckington Road, a new parking area, multi-user trail and towpath and new public area for hosting events.
Severn Trent Water triumphed in the team achievement category.
The Derby-based team carried out work to improve the water quality in the Black Country region of the West Midlands at Willenhall. Principal designer of the project was Eastwood and Partners and the principal contractor was NMCNomenca. The judging panel of eminent civil engineers were impressed by the improvements delivered to the water quality by providing a single underground tank to store storm sewage, reducing spills to the River Tame by 80%.
The project team received their award from ICE President, Richard Coackley, during the ICE East Midlands Gala Dinner and Annual Awards, held at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel on Friday 20 April. Gold event sponsors of the event were Van Elle Ltd, Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering and URS. Silver event sponsor was CCM Associates.
