An update from the ICE BIM Action Group

Date:

10 DECEMBER 2012

Topics:

The second ICE BIM Action Group meeting was held on 28 November 2012. The group is responsible for engaging ICE expert panels on BIM and contributing to wider debate with other institutions and government.

Key actions from the meeting include:

Government Industry Strategy Report

Mark Bew, Chair of the UK Government BIM Working Group, attended and provided insight to the recent Government Industry Strategy Report with an action plan about BIM which has been published on both the BIS and Cabinet Office website. The report is published alongside the Autumn Statement and sets out a 12-point action plan for taking forward BIM within Government.

What does BIM mean to civil engineers?

ICE is committed to ensuring members understand BIM means and encouraging good ways of working, rather than dictating how BIM is used. The message should be “We are going to make you employable around the world and BIM is the vehicle that is going to get you there”. Actions therefore are:

  • Update the terms of reference to reflect the different roles of the Strategy Group and Action Group
  • An activity to identify our key stakeholders/relationships
  • Develop ICE guidance shows the potential for member development and improvement through the take-up of BIM

ICE BIM Action Group plans and proposals

  • To deliver a project to UK Government that secures the engagement of the different segments of UK infrastructure in the adoption of BIM and its consequent delivery of benefits.
  • This will require the creation of clear links between the Government’s BIM and Construction Strategies and each infrastructure segment’s asset planning, creation and operational characteristics.
  • To enable such work, the Action Group have requested funding from the ICE R&D Fund.
  • This funding will enable initial research to establish the level of BIM uptake and activity across the infrastructure sector and the key requirements. The output will be a short report and a heat map – indicating the levels of activity, and the gaps in existing processes and methodologies to support these sectors.
  • This will then inform funding applications to support specific requirements of the UK Government BIM Strategy through BIS and the Cabinet Office.
  • Once a stakeholder plan has been sketched out and the research questions identified, the appropriate ICE Expert panels will be tasked with filling in the gaps, identifying leaders and key stakeholders along the way.
