Barry Clarke becomes 148th ICE President

Barry Clarke has been inaugurated as the 148th President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, stressing the need to inspire the civil engineers of the future.

In his Presidential Address at One Great George Street, Barry challenged ICE members to inspire people with the iconic structures built by civil engineers, to innovate in the way they deliver projects, and to inform society and governments as the authoritative voice of infrastructure.

He also stressed the need for education to be a lifelong commitment, constantly learning new ways of doing things.

Barry Clarke said he was "humbled to be elected President", following on from great civil engineers, including Robert Stephenson, Joseph Bazalgette and William Halcrow.

In his address, Barry paid tribute to his predecessor, Richard Coackley, who was presented with a plaque in honour of his year in office.
