Bethany Wins ICE and Snow Ski Trip in Tallest Tower Competition
The winner of the ‘Tallest ICE Tower’ competition, held by ICE at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham in March, has won two free places on the ICE & Snow ski trip 2012. This is an annual, seven-day ski trip combining engineering challenges with alpine activities.
Bethany Wong (11) from St Mary’s Primary School, Thornbury, won the two free places and ICE South West Regional Director, Trish Johnson, went to the school to meet her and present her with a certificate.
Trish said: ‘The challenge was a great way to introduce the students to civil engineering, and brilliant to have such an exciting prize on offer. Both the tower building competition and ICE & Snow trip are really fun ways to engage with young people and teach them about ICE, as well as learning basic engineering principles.’
Talking to the winner afterwards, Bethany told us: ‘I was really excited to find out that I had won the competition! I’ve never been skiing before and am looking forward to going with my Dad in December.’
Lucky dip from the tallest towers
Bethany and her team fought off tough competition on the ICE stand at the Big Bang Fair, building the tallest ICE tower of the day using wooden blocks. All students’ names from the tallest towers over three days were put into a hat, and Bethany’s name was pulled out to win the grand prize.
