British Airways' Head of Environment to speak at Energy from Waste conference

Date:

2 JANUARY 2013

The Institution of Civil Engineers’ is pleased to announce that British Airways' Head of Environment, Jonathon Counsell, will present a case study on turning household rubbish into jet fuel at the third annual ICE Energy from Waste conference on 21 March 2013.

Jonathon will detail BA's plans to process waste for their fleet, the technology behind the idea, discuss the potential it presents, and the long-term impact on BA's environmental policy.

The UK doesn’t currently have sufficient capacity to process all waste that could be utilised for energy, an estimated 30 million tonnes go unexploited every year and more is exported to Europe. At a time when government is trying to cut carbon emissions and sure-up energy supply it’s increasingly crucial that the potential of extracting energy from waste be realised.

ICE Energy from Waste 2013 will consider the continuing blockers relating to planning, financing and community opposition that are strangling progression within the industry, and will look at initiatives to ensure its future.

The popular conference series, moving from Manchester to London for the 2013 event, represents the best value for money, comprehensive one-day programme of the year and is the key meeting for the whole of the supply chain.

Other programme highlights include:

  • An update on financing projects from the Green Investment Bank
  • An international case study on the ultra-energy efficient Filborna Waste to Energy facility in Malmo, Sweden
  • How burning sewage gas is allowing Severn Trent to generate significant amounts of electricity
