Cheshire Branch events programme packs them in

Cheshire branch is hitting the mark among ICE members and guests alike with its current programme of powerful professional presentations.

More than 160 packed Statham Lodge to hear the latest presentation – a fascinating talk by John Carpenter about issues surrounding the provision of sufficient robustness for modern construction projects.

Members of ICE, IStructE and APS attended this lecture, which focused on recommendations in IStructE’s new practical guide “Structural Robustness and Disproportionate Collapse in Buildings.”

The talk covered the key facets of robustness: Redundancy, Loadpaths, Sensitivity, Uncertainty, Failure Modes and Ductility, and also Progressive and Disproportionate Collapse.

John emphasised the need for consideration of Robustness throughout the project lifestyle including procurement, design, specification, materials sourcing, construction supervision, maintenance and demolition.

The current presentation programme opened with a timely insight into the Mersey Gateway river crossing back in October and has maintained its focus on high profile projects in the region, including the ongoing multi million pound Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority scheme and the proposed Mersey Tidal Power project.

The scale of the subjects on offer has been the key factor in attendance levels, while their relevance has generated spin off benefits in the form of sponsorship and media coverage.
