Civil Engineering Excellence Celebrated in Nottingham

Scott Wilson, WYG Engineering and North Midland Construction were amongst the winners of the Institution of Civil Engineering East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMA’s) 2010. The companies were presented with their awards at the Gala Dinner ceremony held at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel on 23rd April.

The aim of the EMMA’s is to celebrate and raise awareness of innovative and exceptional civil engineering projects and team working in our region. The awards were presented to the organisations by ICE President – Professor Paul Jowitt.

There were four Award categories -: Large Project, Small Project, Studies & Research and Team Achievement. The criterion for the projects was that it was located in the East Midlands and must have been substantially completed during the 2009 calendar year. For the Team Achievement award, the lead partner and/or majority of the team must be located in the region.

The Merit Award winner of the Large Project category was Corby East Midlands International Pool, submitted by WYG Engineering based in Nottingham. The pool is a landmark development and is an Olympic and Paralympic training venue. The pool incorporates sustainable construction, innovative use of timber engineering and complex roof geometry. Bill Duke, Associate Director of WYG Engineering said “From its inception the Corby Pool project proved to be a challenging structure. The design and construction team deserving much credit for their efforts in delivering a great building, which has culminated in the ICE Large Project Award”.

The Merit Award winner of the Small Project category was Poulteney Drive Sewage Station, Quorn, submitted by North Midland Construction based in Sutton in Ashfield. The scheme is for the on-line replacement of an existing Sewage Pumping Station within a restricted footprint in a residential neighbourhood – customer care was paramount to the project.

The Merit Award winner of the Studies & Research category was Recycled Materials in Trench Reinstatement submitted by Scott Wilson who have offices in Nottingham. The project aim was to increase the use of recycled materials and processes on sites; it was undertaken on behalf of the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

The Merit Award winner of the Team Achievement category was Corby Railway Station, again submitted by WYG Engineering. As part of the strategy to regenerate Corby the new station consists of a modular building, high quality public realm, an integrated transport interchange and associated car parking facilities. Passenger services started from February 2009.

Malcolm Jackson, Regional Director of ICE East Midlands said, “The EMMA’s are recognised amongst engineering businesses in the region as the key accolade for inspirational civil engineering projects. Entries this year were of an extremely high standard which truly reflects the talent and quality of civil engineering in the East Midlands.
