ICE Director General awards Atkins employees
On his visit to our region in early September ICE Director General, Nick Baveystock met six engineering technicians from Atkins’ rail and highways & transportation businesses who have recently achieved ICE Engineering Technician (EngTech) Membership.
Having successfully completed their professional reviews in the workplace as part of a recent ICE initiative to encourage membership, Gary Phillips, Matthew Antrobus, Sam Tolley, Philip Williams, Andrew Pearce and George Redman were presented with their certificates by Nick Baveystock, Director General of ICE during a visit to Atkins’ Birmingham office last month.
Nick said: “ICE membership is internationally recognised, highly valued, and says more about an engineer’s professional standing and ability than qualifications alone. The membership has to be earned and is a sign of a person’s dedication and personal achievement, providing a benchmark of an engineer's competencies.
‘I congratulate Atkins for encouraging, assisting and supporting its engineers to achieve EngTech status. This professionally recognised qualification will provide its engineers with the opportunity to improve their career prospects as they work to deliver an appropriate and sustainable transport network for the 21st Century.”
Gary Phillips, Senior CAD Technician from Atkins’ rail business said: “It means a great deal to have reached this milestone in my career as it recognises my knowledge and experience in civil engineering. I encourage anyone considering a career in this field to go for it! It’s a profession that is both challenging and rewarding and provides excellent opportunities for career progression.”
George Redman, Graduate Engineer from Atkins’ highways & transportation business said: “I became a civil engineer so that I could make a positive contribution to the nation’s infrastructure to benefit my generation and also generations to come. As an ICE member I am professionally recognised as being able to carry out my role and it also gives me more confidence in my ability.”
During his visit Nick also met with ICE training mentors, directors and senior project staff from Atkins to discuss a number of training, project and business challenges. Having taken some actions away with him from this visit, Nick is planning to return to the West Midlands region on a biannual basis.
