The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has named Durham University student Elis Wilkins as the winner of its 2013 Graduates and Students papers competition.

The annual Graduates and Students papers competition is held to promote and reward excellence in the communication of civil engineering issues and ideas.  The winner of the 2013 North East Competition, Elis Wilkins, is a QUEST scholar partnered with Balfour Beatty and is currently studying MEng Engineering at Durham University.  He impressed the panel with his written paper and presentation on ‘The effects of high winds on overhead power cables’.  In recognition of his efforts, Elis received a £250 cash prize.

This year's runner up was Vanessa Collins, ncpms Project Manager at the Environment Agency, who presented her paper on ‘Brine well decommissioning; Greatham managed realignment’.  Third place went to Paul Chambers, a QUEST student engineer at Skanska UK Plc who is studying MEng (Hons) General Engineering at Durham University, with his paper on ‘Aerodynamic loading and its structural implications’.

The standard of entries received was very high this year, and made it a challenge for the three judges, Graham Yates (Aone+), Brian Taylor (ICE NE member of Council) and Mike Gardiner (ICE Seniors representative) to score and rank the papers and presentations.
