NW Communications competition

The CUBE gallery in Manchester played host to the North West round of this year’s Communication Competition. Record levels of interest saw six teams enter the event, all of whom were commended for the high standard of their entries.

Teams were given a choice of five scenarios ranging from a cycle-to-work scheme, car parking improvements and a first time sewage scheme, and had to conduct a mock public consultation process. Each team produced a leaflet and consultation strategy, and then delivered a 20 minute presentation to communicate their proposals to the audience, posing as concerned members of the public. The participants then had to keep their nerve under barrages of difficult questions and mild heckling from the audience.

After 20 minutes of frantic deliberation between the judges the winning team was eventually announced as Tony Callaghan, Tom Coon and Mitch Rowley from the Environment Agency. They will now go on to represent the North West at the semi-final to be held in Manchester on 20th April against the regional winners from Scotland and Yorkshire & Humber.

Special thanks go to the event organiser David Almond, photographer Bill Cooney, and the judges Peter Hallsworth, Sam Senior and Megan Charles.
