Essex Branch hold Successful Debate at Colchester Grammar School

Date:

10 MARCH 2011

The motion was 'Civil Engineers are in direct conflict with initiatives to create a more sustainable planet' and guest speakers made interesting and valid points for both sides.

The debate was a new venture for Essex Branch, using a new format and a new venue. The event had several aims: to promote topical debate, to engage with younger members and to establish links between ICE and Colchester Royal Grammar School.

The debate was chaired by Paul Chaplin who, as a former lecturer of civil engineering at Anglia Ruskin University, has had a long career in preparing future generations of civil engineers for the requirements of a sustainable planet.

Dr Stephanie Wray, an independent sustainability practitioner and non-executive director who has worked for almost 20 years in the UK construction industry, spoke for the motion. She was supported by Colchester Grammar School year 12 Student Jo Milik, who is currently studying for his A-Levels and is a keen public speaker.

Speaking against the motion was Steve Ellis, technical director and Highways Practice Area Leader for AECOM and Chartered Civil Engineer with over 25 year experience, mostly in highway design and project managment.  Also speaking against was Stuart Luffman, Graduate Civil Engineer with Laing O'Rourke, currently working on the new £1 Billion T2a Terminal at Heathrow Airport.

Branch Chairman Andrew Kenyon said 'Everything about the event was perfect....I consider it a success' and Paul Chaplin, Branch Secretary reported 'A very good and lively debate - good arguments and thought provoking.'
