Evening Event Promotes Development in Cornwall

17 MAY 2012

The Institution of Civil Engineers South West, in conjunction with the Construction Industry Council (CIC) Networking Forum, has hosted an evening dedicated to development in Cornwall.

The event took place on 16th May at New County Hall in Truro and was attended by more than 50 delegates.

The event began with a presentation by Matthew Vowels, Interim Head of Development of the Cornwall Development Company, Cornwall Council’s arms length economic development company. Matthew showcased current projects in Cornwall and discussed their importance to local development and the economy. He focussed on the various major projects and schemes within Cornwall and how the Cornwall Development Company can work with businesses to unlock barriers to investment and reduce risk.

Chris Pomfret, Chairman of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, then took the floor for the second half of the event. His presentation covered the work and role of the LEP and concentrated in particular on the Economic Growth Strategy for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly 2012-2020, which is available on the LEP website and currently out for consultation.

Mr Pomfret said: ”The construction industry is a key part of the Cornish economy. We want the LEP strategy to be owned by the business communities so I urge you to give us your feedback so we can try to ensure it reflects the real priorities for business growth in Cornwall.”

Trish Johnson, Regional Director of ICE South West, commented: “We are delighted to have been able to host this second CIC Networking Forum in Cornwall, giving our members and our colleagues in other construction-related institutions the chance to really find out more about local regeneration and how they can work together with the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP.

LEPs are still a relatively new concept so it is great for engineers and architects, who have such an impact on development, to have the chance to engage with these key local influencers.”
