College students Steven Harvey and Alexander Erskine have both received QUEST Technician Scholarships, which provide financial support for those who are studying either full or part time courses in civil engineering or construction. Steven and Alexander applied for the award with references from college tutors and were shortlisted for interview.
The scholarship aims to assist those who are completing a course, which may lead to a professional qualification as an engineering technician.
Each successful applicant will be awarded up to £1,500 to financially support them for the duration of their course.
Steven’s £750 scholarship is not the first time he has had a link to ICE North East. During his years in secondary school, he took part in the ‘Eco Wonder’ project, which was supported by the ICE and aimed at promoting civil engineering as a career. Steven, 17, from North Shields is now studying towards a National Certificate in Civil Engineering.
Alexander, 21 from Durham City received the full £1,500 scholarship and is studying a one-year HND in Civil Engineering.
As QUEST scholars, both Alexander and Steven will assume roles as Ambassadors for the region, taking part in educational activities in schools.
Stephen Larkin, regional director of ICE North East, said: “Alexander and Steven are working hard towards recognised qualifications and the new QUEST scholarships are designed to help budding young civil engineers such as these. We wish them the best of luck for their careers and hope they have a long and successful future in the profession.”
Alexander, upon being awarded his scholarship said: “ This will open lots of new doors as my career develops. Receiving this award will show that I have dedication and worked hard. My objective is to continue to develop and gain engineering knowledge so that I can become a chartered civil engineer.
“Being an ambassador for the North East will give me a great opportunity to give something back to the region, by supporting people coming into the civil engineering profession in the same way I have been supported by my mentors.”
Steven said: “It is great to be recognised by ICE and picked out from other fellow technicians to receive the scholarship. When applying for jobs with future employers, this will be a very worthwhile addition to my CV I very much look forward to getting more involved with ICE and progressing further with my career.”
