Student and graduate engineers from Loughborough and Nottingham are preparing to present at the regional final of a prestigious industry competition.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands region holds the final of its Graduates & Students Papers Competition this Thursday (19 January) at the Bass Management Centre, Nottingham Trent University from 6.30pm (refreshments served from 6pm).

Three candidates have been shortlisted to present a 4,000 word paper on a topic of their choice relevant to civil engineering.  Each will also be required to respond to questions from a distinguished panel of industry experts, who will decide on the winner, and from members of the audience.

The three shortlisted papers and their respective authors are:

  • The current and future exploitation of modular bridging, gabion and infrastructure systems, intended for the military, in disaster response by Christopher Ormandy (Loughborough University);
  • Transport policies for the provision of new highways by Sarath Gunathilaka (Nottinghamshire County Council);
  • A basic guide to foundations by Faiyaz Mulla (Loughborough University).

The event is open for non-members to attend.  If you would like to come and support the three candidates, please contact Sebastian John, sebastian.john@arup.com

The winner will be announced at the ICE East Midlands Gala and Annual Awards to be held at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel on Friday 20 April.

Sebastian John, Chairman of ICE East Midlands Graduates & Students Committee, commented: “The ICE East Midlands Graduates and Students Papers Competition is an excellent way for graduate and student members to enhance their career skills and job prospects.

“Civil engineering is a discipline which affects everyone in every walk of life, from the roads and rails on which we travel to the purity of the water we drink and I am looking forward to seeing the three shortlisted candidates present their papers at the event.”
