Earlier this year, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Young Members Committee (HKIE YMC) chose London for their 2011 Delegation Visit.
The ICE London Graduates & Students Committee (G&S) organised a full itinerary for the delegation in April, which included a trip to the Beddington Zero Energy Development, the UK’s largest mixed use sustainable community (known as BedZED) and a tour of the Olympic park site at Stratford.

The G&S welcomed the HKIE YMC at an evening reception. Members of each of the committees gave presentations on their committee’s structure, its aims, achievements and activities, and their individual roles and responsibilities. Throughout the course of the evening, it became clear that both organisations share the same goal to support its membership through skills development and promotion within their institution.
The evening’s topic of discussion, chosen by the visiting delegation, was entitled “Development of Railway Systems” with a focus on sustainable development, public engagement and urban revitalisation. This topic had particular resonance as both the UK and Hong Kong are currently experiencing a tremendous drive in new construction and revitalisation of existing rail networks.
The evening reception featured presentations on:
- Crossrail by Jennifer Roberts, ICE London G&S
- London Underground Tottenham Court Road Station Upgrade by Joshua Southern and Jonathan Cooper, Transport for London
- Railway Infrastructure & Development in Hong Kong by Arlene Lo, HKIE YMC
The evening included the opportunity for discussion and Q&A and attendees shared their experiences of working on railway infrastructure within their own countries, discussing the difficulties encountered and the solutions that they’d found.
This was a highly successful event which enabled young international engineers to engage and connect with each other through their shared experiences and discussion around engineering developments in their respective countries.
