ICE Taunton hosted the South West Round of the Graduates and Students Prize Papers competition on 1 March. Our three finalists, shortlisted from a number of submissions, presented their papers to an audience of about 20 people at The Castle Hotel.
The competition was judged by Trish Johnson (Regional Director), David Peake (ICE Taunton Chairman) and Anthony Pearson (South West G&S Chairman and previous regional winner of the competition).
The judges commented that all three finalists spoke very well; their papers were interesting and their presentations impressive. At the end of the evening, James Cox was declared the winner with his paper entitled 'Long-Term Dynamics of Suction Caisson Supported Offshore Wind-Turbines Founded in Sand'. Second place was awarded to David Collings, closely followed by Emily Atkin of Black and Veatch in third place.
The winners will receive prizes of £300, £150 and £50 respectively and will also be presented with certificates at the Annual Dinner in June if they are able to attend.
Congratulations to all three for their hard work and for reaching the final, and particularly to James for winning the regional heat. We wish him all the best for the next round!
