Highway man takes the Chair
Tim Harbot officially began his term as Chairman of ICE West Midlands on 1st November 2012 where he took over from previous Chairman, Alastair Templeton, at the region's Annual General Meeting.
At the first event of his calendar - ‘The Highway Man – nurturing the strategic road network’ - Tim introduced Graham Dalton, Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, who gave a highly engaging talk to an audience of more than seventy ICE members in Birmingham.
Tim is West Midlands Regional Director for Network Delivery and Development Directorate at the Highways Agency. Working with an annual budget of £180m, Tim and his 120 strong team, have been responsible for delivering road maintenance and minor improvement programmes across the West and East Midlands. Prior to this, Tim was responsible for managing the Highways Agency’s input into the planning system across the Midlands, as well as working actively to support the Government’s growth agenda.
On his new appointment Tim said:
“I am honoured to have been elected Chairman of the West Midlands ICE branch and look forward to tackling many of the challenges the next 12 months will bring.
“Investment in infrastructure is a critical enabler to economic growth and relies more than ever on teams of inventive civil engineers to design, build and maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds us.”
As a seasoned Chartered Civil Engineer and ICE Fellow, Tim brings twenty five years’ worth of industry knowledge and professional experience to the post. Complementing the vision, challenges and opportunities of the ICE.
Championing innovation and sustainability within the sector, Tim is determined to use his time in post to enhance the way that civil engineering is viewed within the region.
“We have to be more innovative than ever before, doing far more with much less; a challenge which we can rise to and which will help civil engineering being recognised at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise.
“I am working with a dynamic team in the West Midlands and am certain that we will raise the profile of civil engineering where it most counts, so our contribution is acknowledged, celebrated and encourages new blood into the profession.”
