ICE Awards - nominations now open

ICE has now opened the nomination process for this year’s awards. Please refer to the below list. Overall, there are six available categories to submit nominations for the ICE Annual Awards. You can also find more information on the awards, guidance notes and nomination form on the ICE website:

Please send submissions electronically to Gloria Liu Gloria.liu@ice.org.uk by Friday 12 April at 17:30. The call for nominations will appear in the member newsletter and NCE in the next following weeks.

Individual Awards


Gold Medal
is the Institution's premier award for civil engineering excellence. It is given to an individual whose sustained contribution to civil engineering over many years is of particular magnitude and stature. The Gold Medal is awarded to individuals who are in the course of, or have just completed, their active careers.
2012 winner: Chris Wise DI FREng FICE HonFRIBA

International Medal is awarded annually to a civil engineer who has prime responsibility for an outstanding contribution to civil engineering outside the United Kingdom or an engineer who is not a citizen of the United Kingdom who has made an outstanding contribution to civil engineering inside the United Kingdom.

Garth Watson Medal is awarded for long, dedicated and valuable service to the Institution by a member or member of staff.
2012 winner: Wendy Blundell MEng CEng FICE MIStructE

Warren Medal is awarded to a member of the Institution in recognition of valuable service rendered to his or her region or branch.
2012 winner: Alasdair MacLennan BSc (Hons) CEng FICE and Wesley Strong BSc CEng CEnv CWEM MICE MCIEWEM


Project based Awards

The Edmund Hambly Medal is for an engineering project that makes a contribution to the wellbeing of mankind and the environment. “Sustainable development” means projects which meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The project should demonstrate an understanding of the implications of the infrastructure's impact upon the environment.
2012 winner: Arup x Wu Zhi Qiao (WZQ) Bridge, China

The Brunel Medal is awarded to recognise excellence in civil engineering. All teams, persons or organisations operating within the built environment will be eligible.
